Nearly a quarter of Centralia homes were built before 1940, when plaster over wood lath was the usual wall.

Repair the plaster surface and its supporting layers
A crack or loose patch can extend past the visible face into the plaster layers beneath it. Filling only the mark can leave a weak edge and a noticeable transition where the repair meets the surrounding surface.
Solis repairs damaged plaster with its supporting layers and the surrounding finish in view. Carrying the edge repair into the nearby surface makes the transition part of the work, so the wall can move from damaged plaster back to a finished room.
- Damaged plaster and its supporting layers repaired together.
- The repair edge carried into the surrounding finish.

Plaster repair in Centralia's older homes

- 22.7%of Centralia homes were built before 1940
Plaster was the wall surface for nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 40s, so many older Centralia homes still have plaster walls and ceilings rather than drywall. National Park Service, Preservation Brief 21: Repairing Historic Flat Plaster

Washington's lead renovation rules cover housing built before 1978, and a firm must be certified to do paid renovation work under them. WAC 365-230-020 and 365-230-360
- Before bidsWashington's asbestos inspection rule
Before work that could release asbestos, the owner or owner's agent has a good faith inspection done by an accredited inspector and gives the report to contractors before they bid. RCW 49.26.013 and WAC 296-62-07721
Confirm the material before choosing a repair
About 23% of Centralia's homes, roughly 1,800 houses, were built before 1940, against 16% across Lewis County. Plaster over wood lath was still the normal wall then. A hairline crack, a bulge where the plaster has let go of the lath and a section that has fallen out each need a different fix, so we check what's behind the surface and whether an earlier repair used drywall.

Keep the work within a sound boundary
We cut back to plaster that's still tight to the lath and rebuild from there, leaving picture rails, baseboards and casing on the wall. A crack running out from a door corner usually means movement, so we look for the cause before filling it. If water is still getting in, that gets fixed first.
Plan the finish after the repair
A house built before 1940 usually carries paint from before 1978 under its current coat, and Washington's lead renovation rules cover housing from before that year. In Lewis County, the Southwest Clean Air Agency has suspect materials surveyed by an AHERA-certified inspector when a contractor renovates. After the repair you choose a primed surface, paint to the corner, or the whole wall repainted.

Plaster Repair questions in Centralia
Can a plaster crack be repaired without replacing the whole wall?
Yes, when the plaster around it is still keyed to the lath. We repair that section and leave the sound wall alone.
How can I tell whether the wall is plaster or drywall?
Take off an outlet cover and look at the cut edge. Plaster is thick and hard and often sits on wood strips, while drywall shows paper on both faces. In a Centralia house built before 1940, plaster is the likely answer.
