Repair the plaster surface and its supporting layers
A crack or loose patch can extend past the visible face into the plaster layers beneath it. Filling only the mark can leave a weak edge and a noticeable transition where the repair meets the surrounding surface.
Solis repairs damaged plaster with its supporting layers and the surrounding finish in view. Carrying the edge repair into the nearby surface makes the transition part of the work, so the wall can move from damaged plaster back to a finished room.
- Damaged plaster and its supporting layers repaired together.
- The repair edge carried into the surrounding finish.

Century-old lath and plaster concentrates in Olympia and Tacoma's historic districts
Wood lath and plaster is a roughly 1900 to 1950 construction method, so the work concentrates where that stock survives: Olympia's South Capitol and Bigelow Highlands, and Tacoma's North End and Stadium District. Because the plaster is keyed through the lath rather than screwed to it, the failure mode is delamination across a field rather than a single crack to fill, which changes both the repair method and how much of a wall has to come down.
Repair or replace: reading the substrate before deciding
The deciding question is how much of the field is still keyed to the lath. Where the plaster is sound and separation is localised, injection and countersunk washers restore it in place; where the keys have failed across a whole panel, that section comes down and is rebuilt to match. We map the extent and tell you which walls fall into which group before pricing the work, rather than discovering it halfway through the repair.
Common questions
How do you repair cracked or loose plaster without tearing out the lath?
When plaster separates from wood lath, applying surface mud fails as the plaster flexes. Solis Interiors stabilizes loose plaster by injecting acrylic conditioning adhesives through small ports into the lath cavity and installing countersunk plaster washers to draw the plaster back securely.
Why do historic plaster walls require specialized repair compounds?
Modern pre-mixed drywall mud lacks the hardness and breathability needed for historic lime plaster. We use fiber-reinforced basecoats and high-density gauging plasters, recreating traditional hand-troweled smooth or textured finishes that bond permanently to the existing substrate.
How does plaster stabilization protect historic architectural details?
Demolishing historic plaster generates hazardous dust and risks damaging intact picture rails, crown moldings, and baseboards. Our targeted stabilization preserves original architectural features and restores solid, quiet walls that endure for decades.
