Repair the plaster surface and its supporting layers
A crack or loose patch can extend past the visible face into the plaster layers beneath it. Filling only the mark can leave a weak edge and a noticeable transition where the repair meets the surrounding surface.
Solis repairs damaged plaster with its supporting layers and the surrounding finish in view. Carrying the edge repair into the nearby surface makes the transition part of the work, so the wall can move from damaged plaster back to a finished room.
- Damaged plaster and its supporting layers repaired together.
- The repair edge carried into the surrounding finish.

- 2.2%of Tumwater homes were built before 1940
Plaster was the wall surface for nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 40s. Few Tumwater homes are that old, so a photo of the wall edge helps confirm whether it is plaster or drywall. National Park Service, Preservation Brief 21: Repairing Historic Flat Plaster

Half of Tumwater's homes were built before 1995 and half after. Tell us the year your home was built when you send photos. U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024, median year structure built
- 1978Washington's lead-safe renovation cutoff
Washington's lead renovation rules cover housing built before 1978, and a firm must be certified to do paid renovation work under them. WAC 365-230-020 and 365-230-360
- Before bidsWashington's asbestos inspection rule
Before work that could release asbestos, the owner or owner's agent has a good faith inspection done by an accredited inspector and gives the report to contractors before they bid. RCW 49.26.013 and WAC 296-62-07721
- Tumwater homes built before 1940
About 2% of Tumwater's homes were built before 1940, when plaster was still the usual wall surface. U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024, year structure built (B25034)
Few Tumwater homes still have plaster
Only about 2% of Tumwater's homes were built before 1940, and roughly 9% more date from the 1940s and 50s. Plaster was the standard wall surface until the 1930s or 40s, so plaster here usually means one of those older houses. Some later homes have a plaster-like skim over board. A photo of an outlet edge tells us which you have.

Bring the repair into the existing plane
We find where the plaster is still firmly attached and repair from there. Cracks get opened, filled and built up in layers until the patch sits level with the wall. Where a repair runs into trim or a corner, we stop at that edge. Texture, if your wall has one, goes on last.

Repair the spot or refinish a larger wall
One crack is a local repair. A wall with several cracks and old patches may look better skimmed edge to edge, though that means more dust and more paint. Paint on plaster this old usually predates 1978, and Washington's lead renovation rules cover homes built before then. We'll tell you which approach fits and what it involves.
Help us see the plaster
Text a close-up of the crack, a photo of the whole wall and, if you can, one of an outlet with the cover off. Press on the area and tell us whether it moves.
Plaster Repair questions in Tumwater
Can plaster be repaired instead of replacing the whole wall?
Usually. If the plaster around the damage is still attached, we repair that area and leave the rest of the wall alone.
How do I know if my Tumwater wall is plaster?
Take an outlet cover off and look at the cut edge. Plaster is thicker and often sits on wood strips; drywall shows a paper face on both sides of a gypsum core.
