Plaster repair for Tacoma's older homes
We repair cracked, loose and damaged plaster in Tacoma homes, starting with what the wall is made of and how far the movement goes. The repair stops where the plaster is sound, so the trim and finishes around it stay in place.

Repair the plaster surface and its supporting layers
A crack or loose patch can extend past the visible face into the plaster layers beneath it. Filling only the mark can leave a weak edge and a noticeable transition where the repair meets the surrounding surface.
Solis repairs damaged plaster with its supporting layers and the surrounding finish in view. Carrying the edge repair into the nearby surface makes the transition part of the work, so the wall can move from damaged plaster back to a finished room.
- Damaged plaster and its supporting layers repaired together.
- The repair edge carried into the surrounding finish.

Plaster repair in Tacoma's older homes

Plaster was the wall surface for nearly all buildings until the 1930s or 40s, so many older Tacoma homes still have plaster walls and ceilings rather than drywall. National Park Service, Preservation Brief 21: Repairing Historic Flat Plaster

Confirm the wall before choosing a repair
Plaster and drywall break differently, so a narrow crack, a loose area and a broad separation each need a different repair. More than a quarter of Tacoma's homes were built before 1940, when plaster over wood lath was still the standard wall. We check how the plaster meets the trim and openings, whether the sections next to it move, and whether an old repair changed the wall. A drywall patch won't hold in plaster.

Keep the repair tied to the sound boundary
We take in the damaged plaster and enough of the sound wall around it for the finish to blend. Picture rails, baseboards and casings stay in place unless you want them changed. If the wall is still moving, we find the cause before we call the repair finished.
Tacoma's historic North End
The City's 2023 College Park nomination counts 535 historic homes in the North End, with an average build year of 1924. A house that age usually has plaster, but we confirm it at the wall before quoting. Paint on older plaster often predates 1978, and patching compounds could contain asbestos until 1977. Washington's lead renovation rules cover homes built before 1978, and in Pierce County the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency requires an asbestos survey by a certified inspector before renovation, unless the owner lives in the single-family house.

Plan the appearance after repair
Tell us whether the repair should stop at a primed surface or carry paint to the corner or across the whole wall. We match the existing texture and sheen so the patch doesn't show. Text us a photo of the damage, the trim next to it and the whole wall.
Plaster Repair questions in Tacoma
Can a plaster crack be repaired without replacing the whole wall?
Usually, yes. If the plaster around the crack is sound and the wall isn't still moving, we repair just that area.
Does an older Tacoma home necessarily have plaster?
Not always. Most Tacoma homes built before 1940 do, but later remodels may have replaced it. A photo of an outlet opening or a damaged edge usually tells us.
