Finishing a Tacoma basement with drywall
We hang and finish basement drywall in Tacoma for new rooms, ceilings and repairs below grade. Before we price it we look at the walls, the floor and the layout, because a house built into a slope, like some in College Park, has a different basement from one on a flat lot.

Finish basement walls around utilities and room use
A basement can have utility access points, a history of water, and walls that need a finish suited to the planned room. Covering those details with board too early can put access or the finish plan out of step with the space.
Solis installs or repairs basement drywall around the existing construction, utility access, moisture history, and intended finish. With the room layout carried into board and finishing work, the completed walls can fit how the basement will be used.
- Drywall installed or repaired for the planned room.
- Utility access retained in the finished layout.

Basement drywall in Tacoma homes
When Tacoma's homes were built shapes what is behind the wall and which rules apply to the work.
- 27% Before 1940
- 16% 1940–1959
- 21% 1960–1979
- 18% 1980–1999
- 18% 2000 or later
- 1967Median year Tacoma homes were built
Half of Tacoma's homes were built before 1967 and half after. New walls in an existing home are finished to meet what is already there, so the home's age shapes the finish plan. U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024, median year structure built
- 17.9%of Tacoma homes were built in 2000 or later
Newer homes are almost all drywall over wood framing, which keeps new work and the existing walls consistent. U.S. Census Bureau, 2020–2024 ACS 5-year estimates

Map the room before board is installed
Stairs, posts, soffits around ducts, the furnace room and changes in ceiling height all affect the board count. We mark which walls and ceilings get drywall, which areas stay open for storage or equipment, and where the finished surface stops. Framing, insulation and wiring belong to other trades, and the quote says so.
Confirm the surface is ready
We look for leaks, stains, soft board and old water marks on the foundation before we cover anything. Any water still coming through the foundation gets dealt with first. Foam board or masonry already on the walls changes what goes over it, so we note it.
Sloped lots and basement garages
The City's 2023 College Park nomination describes houses on sloping lots with garages that open into the basement at sidewalk level. In a house like that, part of the basement sits against the hill and part is at grade, which changes how we think about moisture and access. Tacoma's alteration permit covers remodels and changes to existing buildings, so check with the City whether your basement project needs one.

Choose the finish and room handoff
Tell us the finish level, texture and where paint takes over in each room. A smooth family room and a storage area with taped joints only can sit in the same quote. Text photos of the stairs, the low spots and the full ceiling.
Basement Drywall questions in Tacoma
Does every Tacoma basement need moisture-resistant drywall?
Not every one. The board follows the room's actual conditions and your plans, and moisture-resistant panels go where the room calls for them.
Can the quote include a basement ceiling?
Yes. Tell us about soffits, access panels and lights, and whether you want the ceiling textured or smooth.
