Repair the board before painting
A ding, an open hole and a split seam each take different work: a fitted panel, support, tape and compound, then sanding for texture or paint. Tell us what happened and whether any board is already cut out, so the coating goes over a sound repair.

Decide how far the paint should reach
Paint can stop at the patch, go to the corner or cover the whole wall or ceiling. Next to older paint, a small touch-up often shows in color and sheen. Pick the boundary along with the repair so the estimate shows whether we're painting a patch or a plane.
Treat texture as its own finish decision
On a textured wall the repair is blended into the pattern before paint, and on a smooth wall the joint is tapered into the plane. Converting a whole wall to smooth is a bigger job than matching a patch, so texture, primer and paint each appear as their own step.
