Smooth wall finishes for DuPont homes
We produce a smooth wall finish in DuPont homes by repairing the surface, skimming it flat and carrying it to a stopping point that won't draw the eye. New board, a lightly textured wall and a heavy knockdown each start the job in a different place.

Bring textured walls through to a smooth finish
Existing texture, old repairs, and uneven areas can remain visible after a paint change. Treating one spot alone can leave a transition where the newly smoothed patch meets the surrounding wall.
Solis prepares and skims the selected wall area for a smooth finish, accounting for existing texture, lighting direction, and paint sheen. Working across the surface keeps the finishing area connected and gives the room a consistent ground for its next coat.
- A smooth finish carried across the selected wall area.
- Surface preparation connected to the next paint coat.
Here’s how we get it handled
Text us photos or call
A close-up, a wider view and your city give us a useful starting point. You can also call and talk through the work.
Agree the scope and schedule
We review the work with you, arrange a site visit where needed and put the agreed scope and finish in your estimate.
Get the space finished
Solis completes the agreed work and reviews the finish with you. Include interior painting in the scope for a complete drywall-and-paint handoff.

Smooth wall finish in DuPont homes
When DuPont's homes were built shapes what is behind the wall and which rules apply to the work.
- 6% Before 1940
- under 1% 1940–1959
- 8% 1960–1979
- 24% 1980–1999
- 63% 2000 or later
- 2002Median year DuPont homes were built
Half of DuPont's homes were built before 2002 and half after. Send the year your home was built with your photos; it tells us what the walls and earlier patches are likely made of. U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020–2024, median year structure built
- 13.7%of DuPont homes were built before 1980
Asbestos was banned from wall patching compounds in 1977, so old patches and joint compound in these homes are tested before they are sanded. U.S. EPA, regulatory history of asbestos bans
- 1978Washington's lead-safe renovation cutoff
Washington's lead renovation rules cover housing built before 1978, and a firm must be certified to do paid renovation work under them. WAC 365-230-020 and 365-230-360
Choose a preparation route for the wall you have
Before we skim, we look across the whole plane for old patches, nail pops, seams showing through the paint and damaged paper. Small defects get corrected in place, a sound textured wall gets skimmed, and a damaged area may get new board first. That look tells us whether to stop at a corner, cover one wall or do the room.
Separate a smooth look from Level 5
A smooth wall is the result you see. Level 5 is a GA-214 specification for skimming the face of the board after the joints are done. Taking texture off and repairing damaged board are steps of their own even when a Level 5 skim follows, and our estimate lists them that way.
Carry the finish to a natural edge
Smooth next to texture leaves a visible line, so we end at trim, an inside corner or the edge of the room. Window light, sheen and color all change how that line reads. Only about one DuPont home in seven was built before 1980. If yours is one of them, the existing compound gets tested before we sand, since patching compounds could contain asbestos until 1977.
Smooth-wall estimate
Text a close photo of the current texture, a wide shot of each wall and rough measurements. Mark any ceilings or trim you want in the job and the sheen you plan to paint. The estimate then lays out prep, repairs, the skim and the paint line for that surface.
Smooth Wall Finish questions in DuPont
Can one wall be made smooth while nearby walls stay textured?
Yes. We end the smooth finish at a corner or other natural break and name that wall in the estimate.
Does Level 5 include removing popcorn or wall texture?
No. Texture removal is its own step, priced ahead of any Level 5 skim.
